We may be closed, but there are still fun things to do Downtown this week!
While we are closed, we recommend enjoying one of the other 45+ museums in San Diego- Click here to view a full list. If you are a member of The New Children’s Museum, you have free access to the Living Coast Discovery Center and the San Diego Botanic Garden during our closure (7/17-7/25). For folks in North County, visit the Children’s Discovery Museum in Escondido, they are hosting a Hullabaloo concert Friday 7/21 (with admission).
But if you’re like many of us, you’re up for a Comic Con adventure – so check out the official website for Comic Con to see all they have going on…or check out the unofficial San Diego Comic Con Blog. Even without a badge, you and your family can experience some of the magic of Comic Con this week.
Many local restaurants and cafes are hosting special events this week. The Ghostbusters Mass Hysteria event at The Werewolf downtown, for example, will have fun giveaways and meet-and-greets with some of the artists of the Ghostbusters comic book. And the Cat Cafe, located right down the street from the Museum, is offering a break from the energy of Comic Con with their Coffee and Kitties event, where you can book a time slot to relax with a cat or two.
Other major downtown San Diego locations will be celebrating by offering free family events. If you or your kids are into Nintendo gaming, the Nintendo Gaming Lounge will be at the Marriott Marquis and Marina. The free and open event will feature demonstrations, game releases, and photo ops with characters like Mario and Link, with chances to win give-a-ways and meet new artists! After playing with Nintendo’s new creations, you can go to the Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses concert where you will feel like a part of the video game. With video presentations and a live symphony playing the score of the game, you will feel like you actually took a trip to Hyrule.
Be sure to keep your eyes out for interactive pop-up stations. Usually the streets along the trolley line are filled with kid-friendly things to see and do. The Rex Flex and Pikachu Posse, for example, will be a parade of T-Rex and Pikachu cosplayers marching down the streets of downtown. Just by taking a stroll through the Gaslamp and along Harbor Drive, you’ll be able to get a flavor for what’s going on.
If you want to escape downtown, there are activities and events happening outside of this area as well! Check out local venues for summer specials: Kids under 14 can bowl for free at East Village Tavern + Bowl throughout the entire summer. After the sun goes down, the San Diego Zoo offers entertainment and music in addition to their world famous animal collection during their Nighttime Zoo experience. SeaWorld is also offering nighttime fun during their Electric Ocean Light Festival.
