Looking for inspiring art classes after school in San Diego? Join us at Artopia: NCM Creative Studios for our Art Afterschool Series, a four-week program where young artists explore hands-on, project-based art-making inspired by contemporary art and ideas.

Current Session: Drawing Foundations: See & Sketch! (ages 8-10)

Dates: Wednesdays, November 5, 12, 19 and December 3
Time: 3:15–5:15 pm

Young artists will:

• Build essential drawing skills using graphite and ink
• Explore core elements of drawing: line, shape, texture, and value
• Use sketchbooks as personal spaces to experiment, reflect, and develop creative style
• Learn techniques for balanced compositions and careful observation
• Draw inspiration from everyday scenes and contemporary artworks, including pieces from The New Children’s Museum
• Strengthen artistic eye, confidence, and creativity through guided activities

Meet the Teaching Artists

This series is led by:

Danielle Rives (she/her), Artopia’s Art + Creative Learning Manager

• Specializes in painting, drawing, textiles, and mixed-media
• Explores themes of the everyday, femininity, and domestic life through art

Karlee Mariel (she/her), Studios Coordinator + Preparator in Studios

• Specializes in oil painting, ceramics, illustration and sculpture
• Explores curiosity, discovery, and memory through art and sketchbook practice

Together, Danielle and Karlee bring years of experience teaching and making art, offering kids the chance to learn from practicing contemporary artists.
