The  Power of Social Emotional Learning Through Art

At The New Children’s Museum, we believe in the transformative power of art to inspire growth, foster understanding, and create meaningful connections. That’s why we’re committed to integrating Social Emotional Learning (SEL) into our educational programming—equipping children with essential skills to manage emotions, build empathy, and form strong relationships.

This innovative program is a collaborative effort with San Diego Unified School District’s Visual and Performing Arts Department, an Art Therapist, a project evaluator, and 11 passionate teachers from 7 Title 1 schools. Together, we’ve developed a dynamic curriculum that empowers teachers to use visual arts as a tool to cultivate SEL in their students.

What is Social Emotional Learning?

Social Emotional Learning is the process through which individuals acquire and apply the skills to manage emotions, develop healthy identities, build supportive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Our program taps into the creative power of the arts to bring SEL to life in classrooms, helping children express themselves and connect with others in meaningful ways.
