Looking for inspiring art classes after school in San Diego? Join us at Artopia: NCM Creative Studios for our Art Afterschool Series, a four-week program where young artists explore hands-on, project-based art-making inspired by contemporary art and ideas.

Current Session: Textiles: Dye, Print, & Stitch (ages 11-13)

Dates: Wednesdays, October 8, 15, 22, and 29
Time: 3:15–5:15 pm

Young artists will:

• Explore textile dyeing and surface design techniques including bundle dyeing, eco-printing, and image transfer
• Experiment with natural and traditional art materials to create colorful, patterned fabrics
• Combine custom, found, and repurposed fabrics using patchwork, hand-sewing, and soft-sculpture methods
• Design and embellish a soft sculptural tote bag or a textile wall-hanging
• Draw inspiration from contemporary installations at The New Children’s Museum, including The Wonder Sound by Wes Bruce (he/him) and Future Ancestral Technologies: Odyssey by Cannupa Hanska Luger (he/him)
• Explore themes of nature, storytelling, sustainability, and creative upcycling

Meet the Teaching Artists

This series is led by:

Danielle Rives (she/her), Artopia’s Art + Creative Learning Manager

• Specializes in painting, drawing, textiles, and mixed-media
• Explores themes of the everyday, femininity, and domestic life through art

Maria Sales (she/her), Sr. Teaching Artist

• Specializes in drawing, building, photography, soft sculpture, and design
• Inspired by animation, she develops characters that she brings to life with watercolor, marker, felting, cardboard, or clay!

Together, Danielle and Maria bring years of experience teaching and making art, offering kids the chance to learn from practicing contemporary artists.
