Subject to change. Workshops take place in Seaport Village.

Our working artist studio

In collaboration with Seaport Village, Studio by the Bay is an extension of The New Children’s Museum’s process-based art practice. Two professional artists are creating artwork in the studio located in Seaport Village, exploring blue economy and their connection to water as a central theme in their projects.

Studio by the Bay provides an opportunity for the visiting community and local artists to interact, consistent with the Museum’s mission to stimulate creativity, imagination and critical-thinking skills in children and families through inventive experiences with contemporary art. Both the Museum and Seaport Village are iconic family destinations in the Marina District positioned near the San Diego Bay. The presence of working artists in this partnership strengthens ties among neighbors and builds the capacity for arts and culture along the port of San Diego.

Along with creating a new body of work, the artists will partner with the Museum and Seaport Village each month to host Studio by the Bay Family Days that offer free weekend workshops and play-based experiences for children and families.

The Artists

Kurosh Yahyai

B. 1989

Yahyai’s work focuses on the idea of the self, in which the painted figure is either visually abstracted or representational. Within the representational paintings, Yahyai uses a traditional style of oil painting with a contemporary approach. Through the figure’s pose, choice of color palette and overall mood of the painting, Yahyai achieves a blend of old method technique in classic figurative oil painting with a modern context. Many of the figures gaze out to the audience in order to evoke a visceral and emotional reaction from the viewer rather than a conceptual or logical reaction, in which there is a sense of hesitation and unknowing.

Yahyai received a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Painting from Sacramento State University and a Masters of Fine Arts in Painting and Sculpture from San Diego State University.

Writerz Blok: Jose Venegas

B. 1981

Born in Miami and raised in San Diego, Venegas was fascinated by graffiti art in his youth. With a lack of places to practice his art safely and no resources in his community to utilize his talent, he turned to illegal vandalism as a way to express his creativity. In 1999, he was riding the trolley to work when he noticed a group of youth spray-painting large wooden walls in a yard now known as Writerz Blok, a dedicated space for artists to practice graffiti art.  He then began volunteering his time to support the program. In 2003, Venegas was hired as Writerz Blok’s facility supervisor, where he learned graphic design and became the resident designer coordinating incoming jobs for the storefront.

Venegas now teaches graphic design, silk-screening and graffiti art onsite for after-school programs and with juvenile detention centers.
